CEO Briefing for Affiliates

Greetings, and I hope all is well. The Spring season is upon us and the warmer weather is certainly welcome!

First, I would like to share my sincere gratitude to the UCP National Team for their continued efforts and dedication. The UCP Team Members with the National Office include: Anita Porco, VP of Affiliate Network (, Dallas TX; Kaitlyn Meuser, Marketing Specialist (, DC Office; and Michael Ludgardo, Manager of Individual Giving, (, DC Office. Their unwavering commitment and wholehearted dedication to the mission of United Cerebral Palsy, and urgency in response to UCP Affiliates is exceptional and commendable!  Please reach out to any of us with inquiries, or if you just want to connect. In addition to the UCP Team, we are fortunate to have the administrative assistance of Trudy Gregory ( from Alliance for Strong Families; Finance and Accounting, Kristi Scharl ( from Alliance for Strong Families; and Human Resources, Laurie Gwinn ( from Consult IT HR.  Collectively, we form a dynamic Team to support the efforts of the UCP National Office.

On February 28, 2018, an email was sent to all UCP Affiliates with an invitation to join a “Working Committee” to discuss and identify synergies between UCP and the CP Foundation.   Over twelve UCP Affiliates have responded to the invitation! Prior to this invitation, an initial conference call took place on February 6, 2018 with Richard Ellenson CEO of the CP Foundation including a few of their Board Members along with UCP Affiliate Execs; Jennifer Keatley, John Hancock, Diane Wilush (& BOT) Todd Kates, Trish Otter, Eric Hespenheide (UCP BOT), and UCP Staff, Anita Porco, Kaitlyn Meuser, and myself.  The ultimate goal is to define key initiative(s) that mutually benefit individuals with disabilities, families and our respective organizations. Stay tuned!

I’m pleased to announce the FY 17 Audit is complete, resulting in a clean opinion with no material findings per RSM,  the audit firm. Furthermore, the audit has been reviewed and approved by both the Audit Committee and the UCP Board of Trustees.  Thank you, Audit Committee, for the review and dialogue with RSM, and my gratitude to the Board of Trustees for their review and approval!

UCP of Georgia has been selected as one of the Top Workplaces in Atlanta! Over 2,349 companies in Atlanta participated and only 150 winners are chosen (Top 25 Large employers, Top 50 Mid Employers, and Top 75 Small Employers). You can read the entire press release here.

UCP of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties Awarded $30 Million Contract

Congratulations to UCP of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties for being selected  by the Irvine Community Land Trust to be the managing general partner in the development of a new $30 million affordable housing community. June 21: Thanks to UCP Board of Trustee member, John Hancock, the firm of Moss Adams will be presenting on How Tax Reform Could Impact Tax-Exempt Organizations. The Moss Adams Not-for-Profit practice serves more than 1,200 nonprofit clients and provided over 2.5 million hours of service to organizations throughout the country. The presenter will be Wendy Campos, Partner at Moss Adams and will highlight relevant aspects of the legislation, including changes to:

·        Fringe benefits and compensation

·        Unrelated business income

·        Individual, business, and international provisions that may affect your organization

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

·        Describe the impact of tax reform on tax-exempt organizations

·        Identify effective dates for new tax law provisions

·        Summarize next steps and immediate actions to take in response to the new tax law

The presentation will  demonstrate for affiliates that they have many options when it comes to managing and financing unemployment claims outside of the state program.

American Red Cross CPR, AED Training

UCP and American Red Cross are continuing the current discount offered for UCP affiliates for CPR, AED and First Aid training. More information will follow once the agreement is executed.

Home Depot Rebate Program

On February 21, an email was sent to all Affiliate CEO’s/Executive Directors describing the UCP/ Home Depot Rebate Program benefiting UCP.

The elements of the program were laid out in the email. If you are unsure if your affiliate is part of the program, please email Anita Porco at We will need the credit card number that the affiliate uses for purchases at Home Depot and/or the Home Depot account number assigned to the affiliate.

Victory 100 Certificates

UCP will once again provide certificates for volunteers that have provided 100 hours or more of service at an affiliate. The form for submitting the names of volunteers that you wish to honor can be found here. All submissions must be received by April 5th. Grants Awarded from Money Raised during Steptember Event

Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation (CPARF) has released the names of the organizations that were awarded grants for 2018. Rob White, CEO, states  “Every cent of the money raised through Steptember in the U.S. has been distributed to the successful peer-reviewed research projects […] for 2018.” The list of awardees can be found here.

UCP Annual Meeting 2018 Registration

Registration is now available for the 2018 Annual Meeting. The registration fee is $200.00 and you can register here. Registration will be open until April 22, 2018.

The annual meeting  will be held on April 29-May 1, 2018 at the Embassy Suites, Downtown St. Louis, MO. Please take the time now to make your reservation. Check in time is 3:00 PM CST and check out time is at 12:00 PM CST.


For planning purposes, we will begin the conference on Sunday April 29th with RAC meetings starting at 1:00 PM CST. We plan to end the conference Tuesday May 1, 2018 at approximately 1:00 PM CST, following lunch. The voting at the Members of the Corporation meeting will occur on Tuesday morning. Dress will be business or business casual.

Voting and Credentials for 2018 Annual Meeting

Notice of the Annual Meeting of the Members and proxy/voting forms will be sent out to all affiliates on March 30th. Please look for them in your email, complete them, and return. If you do not plan to attend the meeting you can assign your proxy to someone else who is attending or to the Proxy Committee. Voting members will need to sign for credentials at the annual meeting based on the information provided on the forms. Affiliates must be in “good standing” and current on dues in order to vote at the annual meeting.

Materials for the annual meeting will be sent out by April 13, 2018. Please make a copy of the materials and bring them with you to the annual meeting or have them available electronically. We will not have materials available for each attendee at the annual meeting.
