CEO Briefing for Affiliates

Greetings!  I am delighted to announce the UCP Network Newsletter is back, and that UCP of MetroBoston is now partnering with UCP National on marketing, communications, social media and information & referrals management. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Todd Kates, CEO of UCP of MetroBoston and his wonderful team for their leadership and commitment to partner with us in the delivery of these communications services. Also, stay tuned for more information about UCP’s 70 Year Anniversary celebration, and hope you will accept our invitation to participate on the planning committee.

UCP National is very excited to launch “Phase One” of our new and improved website, ucp.org. This site has been revamped to become Affiliate centric and more user-friendly, with ease of navigation in accessing Affiliates service information and donation links. Please log on to experience the new site and send me a note if you have any thoughts or recommendations to share. We thank Canyon Business Solutions (Formerly Westar) for their expertise and their generosity in working on the website revamp project.

The Policy Committee has drafted five general advocacy principles now posted on the “Policy Tab” in ucp.org. Thank you to Jeanne De Sa, chairperson of the Policy/Advocacy Committee and the members for their inclusive work to craft these guiding principles. The “Policy Tab” will also provide you with the latest communications, including a letter sent to President Trump in reference to his remarks on April 27, 2018 to the U.S. Paralympic athletes, and a recent press release expressing UCP’s concern for the medical care of individuals with disabilities in detention facilities.

Also, I am pleased to report that the 2018 Annual Meeting which took place in St. Louis was extremely productive, giving us an opportunity to discuss the progress made over the past year and in addition we listen to the Affiliates as they proposed priorities for fiscal year 2019 for National to consider.  Key priorities discussed were:

  • Improving the financial health of UCP National

  • Enhancing branding, marketing & communications

  • Intensifying Advocacy & Policy activity

  • Increasing the number of Research Collaborators

  • Enriching networking efforts and website presence

Please take note and also save the date, the 2019 UCP Annual Meeting will take place in Chicago on March 24-26, 2019.  More details forthcoming.

A great deal has already been accomplished with more work ahead of us and UCP National is ready for a deeper dialogue with our Trustees, Affiliates, and Team to articulate a vision for the next three to five years.  This will require an inclusive dialogue and I will be reaching out to Affiliates, the Board of Trustees and my Team for their participation and support.

There is also great news on the financial front, as UCP National is projecting positive financial results for the end of FY18 (September 30, 2018).  This is largely due to the major decrease in expenses, bequests and new efficiencies we have undertaken.  In addition, the Finance Committee is currently reviewing the FY19 proposed budget for recommendation to the Board of Trustees.

I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our team, Anita Porco and Michael Ludgardo, to Diane Wilush for her leadership of the Board of Trustees and Committees, and to our dedicated Affiliates for their contributions in setting the pathway for our organization’s sustainability and internal capacity building!

Finally, please join me in congratulating Michael Ludgardo for his promotion to Development Manager.  In addition to his responsibilities related to individual giving (direct mail, workplace giving & major gifts), Michael will oversee corporate sponsorships, annual meeting sponsorships, bequests and other giving programs such as the “Network for Good”, and the car donation program which have revenue share benefits for Affiliates.

Thank you again for all your efforts on behalf of the thousands of children, teens and adults with disabilities and their families UCP serves.  We could not accomplish what has been done without you!

Recognition of UCP Heartland

UCP wants to recognize Brenda Wrench, CEO, UCP Heartland and her staff for their generous hospitality in preparation for and during the 2018 Annual Meeting in St. Louis. Not only did Brenda provide UCP an opportunity to meet the senior leadership at the affiliate but UCP Heartland gathered items for the attendee gift bags, loaned UCP equipment for the Annual Meeting, secured a media interview for our sponsor Kate Farms and provided staff support throughout the conference. We are particularly grateful for assistance from Stacey Krueger, Marketing and Volunteer Coordinator and Teresa Manning-Williams, EHR System Administrator who helped with the AV. Stacey worked with UCP stuffing gift bags, photography, registration, mailing materials and so much more. Thanks to all of UCP Heartland for their support!

Kate Farms Event at the Annual Meeting

Thanks to Kate Farms and their relationship with the Busch family, attendees to the Annual Meeting were treated to a customized tour of Grant’s Farm and a reception. The tour offered attendees a special tour of the famous Clydesdales and the first floor of the Mansion. An additional surprise was a personal message from Andy Busch.


Congratulations to Dr. Ilene Wilkins

Dr Ilene Wilkins, CEO of UCP of Central Florida deservedly received the Kathy Maul Leadership Award that was presented by Armando Contreras, CEO of UCP. We send our congratulations to Ilene for her many accomplishments and willingness to share her expertise with affiliates! Ilene has hit the 25 million mark in the affiliate budget size!


Congratulations to Brian Winterfeldt

Brian Winterfeldt, Principal, Winterfeldt IP Group was the recipient of the Chair Award presented by Diane Wilush, Chair, UCP Board of Trustees. Brian has been the Trademark & Intellectual Property Counsel for UCP for many years and has provided significant pro bono services throughout the years.

Information from the Annual Meeting 2018

At the Members of the Corporation meeting on May 1, 2018 the following was approved by the membership:

  1. The revised Affiliation Charter Agreement.

  2. The reelection of Diane Wilush, Stephen DeBiasi, Jeanne DeSa, Mike Meadors and Ouida Spencer for a two-year term effective October 1, 2018- September 30, 2020.

  3. The election of Bill Thrash, April Kaylor, John Anderson,Luis Ramirez Thomas and Christopher Houk to two-year terms on the Board of Trustees of the Corporation, beginning October 1, 2018.

  4. Ratified the election of Patricia Otter – Midwest RAC, Peter Quattromani – Northeast RAC, Paula Rader – South RAC and Margaret Farman – West RAC and Ilene Wilkins – UCP of Central Florida as the at large representative to serve on the Board of Trustees beginning October 1, 2018.

Change to Envelopes used for Affiliate Invoices

In order to make the dues invoices more recognizable as being from UCP, Alliance will be using UCP letterhead envelopes. The remit address will continue to be inserted inside. Please continue to submit your dues payments to:

Appointment of New Member to Bellows Committee

Brenda Yarnell, former CEO of UCP of Land of Lincoln has been appointed by the Chair of the UCP Board of Trustees as a member of the Bellows Committee. Brenda was approved by the Board of Trustees at their meeting April 29, 2018. Brenda has been retired from the affiliate for over a year. Brenda has been enjoying international travel however she remains a CARF surveyor and has being surveying since 1996. She currently serves on the ILPEx Board of Directors. The ILPEx recognition program was founded in 1994 as the state’s affiliate to the Baldrige Program. The Bellows Committee is delighted to have Brenda on the committee and believe her experience as CEO of an affiliate will bring additional value to the committee.


Executive Director at UCP of Greater Hartford

Dawn Frey has been named as Executive Director of UCP of Greater Hartford. Scott Stafford remains with the affiliate as Regional Administrator for Sunrise Group that includes CT, MD and VA. Please welcome Dawn to the UCP network.


Donna Fouts Announces Retirement

After thirty three years as the Executive Director at UCP of Hawaii, Donna Fouts has announced that she will retire at the end of 2018. We congratulate Donna on her retirement and thank her for her dedication and commitment to the individuals with disabilities that Donna and the affiliate served over the years. Under Donna’s leadership the Childhood Development Center went from serving 30 children to over 250. Donna is well know for her Rubber Ducky Fundraising event and has been a real inspiration to all of us. Read more here


The Search for an Executive Director at UCP of Hawaii Has Begun

December 11, 2018 Affiliate Topical Call

Mark Boles, Chair, Bellows Committee with be available to to answer any questions about the Bellows Applications and it will be an opportunity for affiliates to share how they are using the funds for the individuals they serve and some best practices using the Bellows stories to raise awareness about the affiliate.


UCP National Development Update

As you may already know, UCP National offers individuals an opportunity to choose an affiliate for their donation through Online Giving and the Car Program. All affiliates are included as recipient options by default and there is no charge for an affiliate to participate in the programs (there is a 1% fee for processing time). Between October 1st, 2017 and June 30th, 2018, UCP National has granted $22,779 to affiliates through the Online Giving Program.
